There are many reasons for individuals electing to draw up an Advance Directive. At LCS, we find that the main purposes for an Advance Directive are:
- To allow individuals to refuse any specific treatments
- Decide if you would want to be resuscitated or placed on life support system
- Decide whether to receive specific invasive therapies
This gives individuals more power and an increased element of choice in matters that they would usually not be consulted on due to the nature of the circumstances you would find yourself in.
Advance Directive’s (living Will’s) cannot be used for reasons which will result in doctors violating their ethical code of conduct. As such, it is not possible to use an Advance Directive to:
- Ask for your life to be ended
- Force doctors to act against their professional judgement
- Nominate someone else to decide about treatment on your behalf – unless you have prepared a Health and Welfare LPA
It is imperative that an Advance Directive is written clearly so that there is no confusion when later life circumstances arrive. At LCS we are fully qualified and experienced in the drafting of Advance Directives and can offer appropriate advice to anyone considering this service.
